Heartscreen New York for Shoreham-Wading River8/28/2017
My name is Jordan McClintock and I am a senior at Shoreham Wading River High School. Most students get their vision, hearing and vitals checked as part of their routine physicals. Surprisingly, we still overlook the most important organ: the heart. Sudden cardiac arrest isn’t just an issue that occurs in adulthood. Thousands of teens die every year because of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). In younger victims, survival rate hovers around only 5%. Research shows that an ECG in addition with a physical exam and complete medical history is the best way to prevent sudden cardiac arrest. According to studies 1 out of 100 students that attend a heart screening will discover a heart condition. Cardiovascular screening in athletes is routinely practiced and sanctioned by major sporting and medical associations such as the American Heart Association (AHA) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC). These screenings are not usually covered by health insurance.
Your child has an opportunity to receive a free heart screening on October 14, 2017 from 9 AM to 3 PM in the Prodell Middle School Gyms. This program is of no cost to our district nor families who have student athletes between the ages of 12 to 25. Currently, SWR student athletes have priority and can secure appointment spots. On September 15, the screening will become available to the student athletes of surrounding communities. Parents can register their children, find forms and more information here! My family runs a golf outing every other year in honor of my brother Tom who passed away in 1986. Since 1986 we have been giving a scholarship in his honor at Calhoun HS in Merrick where we grew up. We have been giving a $3,000 scholarship annually. A few years ago we decided to expand the scholarship to include an outstanding student athlete at SWR HS. Each year we give $1,000. The past winners have been Bobby Puckey (Ithaca College Football), Chris Rosati (Salve Regina Football) & Chris Sheehan (Salve Regina Lacrosse). To date we have given over $90,000 in scholarships and $80,000 to the Calhoun Sports Boosters for improvements to Calhoun athletic facilities. Thank you for time and consideration. I have attached a flyer with the information. If anyone has any questions, please give me a call 631-942-7318.
Regards, Chris Fehmel |
