My name is Jordan McClintock and I am a senior at Shoreham Wading River High School. Most students get their vision, hearing and vitals checked as part of their routine physicals. Surprisingly, we still overlook the most important organ: the heart. Sudden cardiac arrest isn’t just an issue that occurs in adulthood. Thousands of teens die every year because of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). In younger victims, survival rate hovers around only 5%. Research shows that an ECG in addition with a physical exam and complete medical history is the best way to prevent sudden cardiac arrest. According to studies 1 out of 100 students that attend a heart screening will discover a heart condition. Cardiovascular screening in athletes is routinely practiced and sanctioned by major sporting and medical associations such as the American Heart Association (AHA) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC). These screenings are not usually covered by health insurance.
Your child has an opportunity to receive a free heart screening on October 14, 2017 from 9 AM to 3 PM in the Prodell Middle School Gyms. This program is of no cost to our district nor families who have student athletes between the ages of 12 to 25. Currently, SWR student athletes have priority and can secure appointment spots. On September 15, the screening will become available to the student athletes of surrounding communities. Parents can register their children, find forms and more information here! |
